The Otter Raft

OTTER Brochure
The Otter Slide Newsletter (Spring Edition)
The Otter Motto: “Busy and Bright”
The Otters are the youngest section of BPSA-Canada and are for youth age 5,6, and 7 years old.  Otter will move to the Timber Wolf Pack at the age of 8.

Otters learn useful family skills, community skills, and learn to play safely together while being introduced to Scouting and preparing for the Timber Wolf program. The Otter section is known as the Raft with 25-32 youth, and is sub-divided into Dens made of 6-8 children. There can be more than one Raft.

There is a proficiency badge system of four “paws”, a Safety Badge, Service Badge and a Camping Badge. The highest award is the Swimming Otter Badge.

Advancement & Achievement in the Raft
Activities in the Raft are often wrapped around these areas of advancement and normally have a purpose behind them.  The Raft program is even more focused on having fun, making friends, and playing energetic games, singing silly songs, and learning the basics of Traditional Scouting in the outdoors.  There is a place for every program item.

The Character Development
Since its origin, the Scouting program has been an educational experience concerned with values. In 1910, the first activities for Scouts were designed to build character, physical fitness, practical skills, and service. These elements were part of the original Otter program and continue to be part of the Traditional Scouting today.

Character development should extend into every aspect of a youth’s life. Character development should also extend into every aspect of the Raft program. Otter Leaders also strive to use the 10 points of the Scout Law throughout their programs—service projects, ceremonies, games, skits, songs, crafts, and all the other activities enjoyed at Otter Raft meetings and outings.
